For me, the beginning of each new month is a particularly busy time, not
only for me during office hours, but also in the evenings. On the first
Monday at 7:00 p.m. there is a Salem Tech Team Meeting. On the first
Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. there is a Witness Committee Meeting. On the first
Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. there is a Social Justice Meeting. These three
committees are the areas where I believe I am needed, where I have a
passion to make a difference, and also where -- as in the case of the
Witness Committee – it just makes me feel good.
I am on the Tech Team because of my heavy use of our computers and office
equipment and I want to be a part of helping to keep the office running
efficiently and to do my work better and faster.
I am on the Social Justice Committee basically because of Salem's Food
Pantry. I feel that the Food Pantry is so needed. I was there for its
beginning and I want to continue to be involved with it, even as it
changes and there are volunteers who now are available to serve the
clients who come and volunteers who do shopping and help keep the shelves
stocked. It is "good for my soul" to be able to help in some small way
the people who come -- it makes me feel like I'm making a difference. (Be
sure to check the "Salem Food Pantry Needs" list in the bulletin every
week. The items with an "X" are immediate needs items. That means we are
completely out or only have one or two items on the shelf. Any help is
greatly appreciated! Whether it is given monetarily (and we shop) or if
you want to bring in the items yourself.)
The hidden benefit of being on the Social Justice Committee is that it is
helping me to be a better and more thoughtful steward of God's gifts. It
is also raising my awareness of areas of need and of agencies in the area
that are helping others. It's a good thing!
As for the Witness Committee, what can I say? I have a great time with
them. The people on it are – well, let me say this – there's lots of
laughter and entirely too much fun had at the meeting. I do believe we
are Salem's "noisiest" committee. And I guess that's part of what being a
"witness" should be. Being heard, letting others know what Salem and God's
love is all about. The committee is involved in Salem's outreach to the
community. Its purpose is to let people know about Salem and what Salem
is doing to "Live Christ's Love."
