"God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good."
Genesis 1 : 31
On which day of creation did God make the mosquito? Are insects among the
"creeping things and wild animals" that he created on the sixth day, just
before humankind?
I have been avoiding the backyard since the last rainstorms. We have a
very big flock of mosquitoes, as I am sure you do, too. The mosquitoes are
having a good year. Unfortunately, our dog needs to visit the backyard
from time to time. And I do have to mow the grass once in a while. So I
spray the bug repellant and mutter something about "what good are
mosquitoes, anyway?" as I try to hurry the dog through her routine.
Well, a quick Google search on "What good are mosquitoes" (try it…that's
exactly what I typed in the box) reminded me that God does indeed have a
purpose for the annoying little critters. In the food chain, mosquito
larvae consume small, single-celled algae. The larvae are in turn eaten by
tadpoles, small fish, and other water creatures. Those mosquitoes that
reach adult stage are delicacies for bats, swallows, purple martins, and
other animals. Mosquitoes are important to a small degree in the
pollination of some plants. One writer even mentions the mosquito's
possible spreading of disease as part of the survival of the fittest that
strengthens other species. While I personally don't much appreciate it,
the world would miss the mosquito. And it is part of everything God made.
Part of all creation that works so wonderfully together. And indeed, it is
very good, mosquitoes included.
